Home for the Arts

Our art:lab offers residencies to artists from all disciplines and is committed to the individual support of every resident. Writers, artists, dramatists, film makers and composers from Europe and South Africa could apply for a residency at Jozi art:lab.
For a month every resident should either work on his own project or on a project of the art:lab.

African Writer's Residency Award (AWRA)
The African Writer's Residency offers a two month international working stay at the Foundation to writers of contemporary African literature, who are related to or engaging with contemporary themes and concerns of Africa and the African Diaspora.

Cambodian-South African artist exchange

Together with the Cambodian art space Sa Sa Arts jozi art:lab enables the exchange of Cambodian and South African artists. Each year one Cambodian artist will stay in Johannesburg, one South African artist will stay in Phnom Phen to explore local and international art scenes, urban developments and concepts, artistic developments in different continents, in different spaces.

TAF & Sylt Emerging Artist Award (TASA)

This new residency programme is a collaboration with the Turbine Hall Art Fair in Johannesburg/South Africa and is granted once a year for an emerging artist exhibiting at the TAF. This TAF & Sylt Emerging Artist Residency Award (TASA) offers a two month international working visit to the Foundation based on the island of Sylt/Germany in the North Sea.

ABSA L'Atelier Merit Award
The ABSA L’Atelier is South Africa’s most prestigious art competition and is held annually for artists between ages 21 to 35. This award not only ensures South Africa’s emerging artists of recognition, but also affords them the opportunity to develop their talents abroad. A look through the list of previous winners will testify to this.
Four prizes will be made available: First prize, two merit award prizes and the Gerard Sekoto Award for the most promising artist.
One of the merit awards is done in cooperation with the Sylt Foundation. The merit winner will sopend a two-month residency on the island of Sylt in Northern Germany.

South African Visual Artist’s Residency (SAVAR)
The two month Sylt Foundation residency has been awarded annually to a South African artist or a South African resident who have sustained a career profile of a minimum of seven to ten years in the contemporary visual sector.

2013: Kai Lossgott
Indra Wussow: "Kai Lossgott is working on a project that engages the delicate nature of the island and also offers new ideas and insights about global ecological issues through the medium of his art work. We are sure that the realization of his CARBON project will be important within the international art scene and with its interdisciplinary approach it will also be of interest for scientists and activists."
